Popping into churches is always a favorite when I'm traveling and the churches of Oaxaca did not disappoint! We toured the Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzman which overlooks the cities Botanic Gardens-- unintentionally getting a two for one tour;)
Saturday's are for weddings in Mexico and similarly to how we saw it done in San Miguel, the Wedding Masses are back to back! So as soon as one wedding recesses out to celebrations in the front plaza, the next wedding processes in (services are typically at least an hour so it's not actually as fast as it sounds! But you do see the people involved in the next wedding waiting by the door to be ushered in!). Weddings are followed by really fun Calenda Parades which often involve the Marmotas (large spinning ball), Monos de Calenda (bride & groom puppets), Oaxaca Chinas (women with baskets on their heads signifying gifts for the couple) and a local band.
One evening we sat and watched no less than 7 Calendas pass by on alternating routes!
