Portugal 2025 | Lamego
Our stay in Lamego was my favorite lodgings. Nestled in between the twists and turns of road going up the hillside and overlooking the valley, our hotel was adjacent to a historic home covered in the most beautiful dark green tile. One evening, after a long day of site seeing, a group of us climbed the 686 steps to the Sanctuary of our Lady of Remedios Cathedral and managed to sneak it right before it was locked up for the day. It's a stunning 18th century Baroque/Rococco church atop Mount St. Stephens and the hike up is decorated with fountains, statues and azulejos. It was completed in 1905 and offers panoramic views of the city . The blue and white ceiling in the church reminded me of Wedgewood Pottery and the elderly nun was so kind to let us step back behind the altar to experience the incredible tile and portraits in the back room. It was another 686 steps back down and then a winding up-hill walk back to our hotel but all shared with beautiful company at the dreamiest time ...
