small towns: Irvington

Mary and I *love* small towns {or downtown/historic areas of big towns}, good, eclectic coffee shops, & antique/resale nooks. And when they mix, that's even better.

Last fall we realized that Indianapolis is surrounded by such places... and though we've been privileged to explore many of them, there are many more we haven't... or some that need re-exploring:) So we wrote up a list of towns off the top of our heads and talked about crossing one or two off our list each month. But then the list sat. And for months we couldn't get our schedules to work to get these little adventures started. Then finally, spur of the moment this week, we were both free and Mary suggested we start with Irvington. And to Irvington we went:)

It's such a quirky little community... classy, hippy & ghetto all in one. I couldn't even get my mind around that at first! But it has a beautiful little park, several antique stores, resale shops & a store full of handmade goodies. For such a small community, it has more than it's share of coffee shops! Starbucks sits proudly on one corner but Lazy Daze, the hippy coffee spot, has a better drink menu & their Red Tea Mango smoothie is superb for warm summer evenings.

We started off with a picnic in the park... which turned into an impromptu mini-photo shoot with Mary because believe-it-or-not, she has *never* been in front of my lens for a shoot! Totally my fault that I haven't made it happen before now. But gosh, is she gorgeous or what?! And she also snapped a few of me which was fun:)
I'd seen something online about live music at the Irvington Theater so we headed that way to check it out. It was not at all what we were expecting {can you say new age/gay community event?} so we moved on and kept exploring the town. It just so happens that they have an event called "First Friday" which was going on, so many of the shops were open later/serving hors d'oeuvres and there was live music at a few different places. My camera battery died halfway through... and the rest of the time I was kicking myself for not checking it beforehand/bringing a spare. Thus, no pictures of the Lazy Daze coffee shop, our drinks or us chatting away at their outside tables. But those memories are in our minds/hearts... and that matters most:)
I can't wait to see where our next adventure takes us!
yay for self timers & picnic baskets that serve in place of a tripod:)
