I was browsing through old, old blog entries today and came across so many memories. There used to be a time where I would simply pick up my camera and start snapping photos of whatever caught my eye- not bothering to move things or style them perfectly, but capturing them just as they were. It was a practice that stopped time and told the story simply by recording what I saw. These images may not mean much to someone on the outside looking in but I’ve realized what a gift I gave to myself (and those in my life) by making time to capture those raw moments several years ago. A lot of significant moments have taken place in my life the last few years and I have very few written or photographed tokens to help me remember it all. I want to change that moving forward. And not only does it serve as a online scrapbook of sorts, it also inspires me in many ways. There is something incredibly freeing about capturing things as you see them and letting go of the perfectionism and stylization that seeps into every other aspect of life. Here’s to more.
So to start with, here are some snaps of our first home. Yesterday had me sick in bed with a fever most of the day but today I walked around capturing just a few of the details that make our house a home. B has done an incredible job cooking and keeping the dishes clean while I was down but that’s just a taste of the way he has served me everyday as we make a home together. These are the things I want to remember. We haven’t completely decorated and styled every room, we don’t have art on every wall and we don’t even have much furniture to call our own, but we have been incredibly blessed and provided for in every way and this house has been the sweetest place to call home together.
The three tubs of oats on the counter tell of the large amounts of oatmeal and granola we go through each week. The beeswax and oils in the cabinet tell of nights spent twisting B’s hair. The piles of paper and wedding invite speak of us trying to get our newly married ish together when it comes to bills and schedules. The globe that faintly still says “know grace” and the pile of images/frames on the floor speak of stories still yet to be finished. The essential oils and roll of toilet paper on the otherwise empty night stand speak of real life “in sickness and in health”. And that celebrate card is a reminder of our vision to gather many different colors of feet under our dinner table as often as possible.
p.s. our whale friend still needs a name.
You could name him Saugatuck. That's where I found him!

ReplyDeleteGood idea to capture those memories! I was going to suggest Whalen for a name (because that is what we named ours), but Marmie's is a better suggestion. But, I love the stove controls! They are just like the ones that I grew up with in the house that my dad built for my mom. Hope you are doing well! Blessings! Sorry Emily! My Google is messed up and shows someone else's name. I deleted the comment above and tried to fix. Probably to no avail! Dawn Parr
