It's taken me one whole year to find the time to process our images from Oaxaca and now with another international trip right around the corner, I'm doing my best to bring some of them to the light of day through blog posts!
Oaxaca was never on my radar until a few years ago but everything I heard about it pointed to rich culture, good food & lots of color! We found a great airbnb on the edge of the historic city center and made that our home base for 8 days. This trip was a combination of 5 yr wedding anniversary, my 30th bday and baby moon for little man #2. After a few really difficult years due to Brian's job, we didn't take any of this relaxation & exploration time for granted!
I don't know many people who have traveled to Mexico outside of all the inclusive resorts on the coast but I've become a huge fan of the different land-locked cities (remember when I traveled to San Miguel in 2022?!) and Mexico City is on our list next!
One thing that really stood out to me this time (and perhaps it's because of how far south we were?) is how often they differentiate between pre-Hispanic Mexico and modern day Mexico when it comes to art, food, architecture & traditions. From a naive American perspective, we just think of Mexico and Spanish culture as being synonymous. But like just about every other piece of geography on this side of the world, it had it's own rich culture and tribes of people before it was colonized by the Spaniards in the 1500's. Spain forced the Indian tribes to convert to Catholicism & assimilate culturally but to this day, there are still rich pieces of Mexican Indian heritage that push through.
We spent most of our time in the historic city center since we didn't rent a car but did have the opportunity to bike out to El Tulle one day, tour some ancestral Mezcal distilleries another day and bus up to Mont Alban on one of our last days so you'll see those excursions in coming posts! Stay tuned!
