Thanks to once-upon-a-time being a stronghold for privateers (pirates approved by the king), the old town of St Malo is surrounded by granite walls. If you've read All the Light We Cannot See, you'll be very familiar with this port city and thanks to it's location on the coast of France, it's become a popular vacation spot. We were exhausted after spending most of the day touring Mont Saint Michel but had to make time for an hour long sprint through this fortress to find the address of Marie Laure-LeBlanc (the protagonist in All the Light We Cannot See). Also stopped to sample some of the best Kouign Amann pastries which originated in this quaint little spot!
