Lisbon, Portugal Part IV | Alfama

I mentioned in an earlier post that much of Lisbon was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake. But thanks to being built on a foundation of dense bedrock, Alfama survived the disaster and is now the oldest neighborhood in Lisbon. The hill it resides on is capped with St George's Castle which was fortified by the Romans, Visigoths & Moors dating back to the 6th century. The earthquake did affect much of the castle but many walls and towers were restored in the 20th century. The castle provides breathtaking 360 views of Lisbon, the River Tagus and the surrounding area!
Bairro Alto holds the city's traditional Fado quarter and the Fado music has inspired and influenced much of the poet, novelist & artistic community. With this being the oldest neighborhood, it's also inhabited by much of the oldest generation in Lisbon and as you wander around, you'll often come across individuals leaning out of their window sills or against their doorframes watching life take place around them!
