Through airbnb, I found a little traditional chateau hostel right outside of Zurich. The chateau also housed a restaurant and Elon, the chef, called out a greeting from the upstairs window when we pulled in. Once we were settled, he asked if we were hungry and after we pointed out a few things on the menu, he traded his sweater for a chef’s jacket and brought us a bottle of wine. It was Christmas Eve and there weren’t any other guests so he spent the next two hours alternating between bringing us delicious food and sitting with us while telling stories about growing up in Turkey. It really felt like it was straight out of a movie— the restaurant tucked into a chateau on the side of the road and bathed in a warm glow of low light. A worldly wise chef full of stories. Delicious Swiss ravioli & Turkish kabobs paired with lessons about each bottle of wine we consumed. Then later, plugging in our phone chargers in the bedroom with low ceilings as we went to bed and half expecting to blow the fuse for the whole town. Like the scene from Leap Year🙈
Truly a delightful stay and experience!
Christmas Day we drove into Zurich and walked around in the cold drizzle, running into just a handful of people. Our main objective was to see the tip of the Swiss Alps from the Burkliplatz dock and then run in the main train station to see the world renown 32ft Christmas tree decorated with thousands of Swarovski Crystals. Both were beautiful sights to behold! Also, it finally dawned on me why swans have always been the mascot of Swarovski Crystals— there were Swans everywhere in the freezing cold waters of the Limmat River & Lake Zurich!
After a quick walk around town (and finding *everything* closed), we decided to hop in the car and head towards Stuttgart where we’d be spending the night.
Up next: Stuttgart & Heidelberg
