Basel was on our way from Colmar to Zurich so we decided to make a quick stop to see the sites! Perks of traveling in a car:) It is situated on the Rhine River, right in the tri-country area where France, Germany & Switzerland all connect. Home to some of the worlds largest pharmaceutical & biotech companies, it’s known as one of the world’s best places to commercialize new drug discoveries.
Since it was Christmas Eve, things were beginning to close down but we managed to slip in for some afternoon tea at the oldest tea room in Switzerland called Confiserie Schiesser. It’s across the street from the Basel Town Hall which dates back to the 1500’s.
Swiss (and as we later found out, Germany) cuisine consists of a lot of heavy meat, potatoes, cheese & gravies as well as lots of meat pate. Not my favorite but we still found some dishes we liked! Knowing that everything would be closed the next day for Christmas, we ran in Aldi on our way out of town and stocked up on some meal items and then headed to our lodging for the night. In our short time in Switzerland, we had already gathered that it’s incredibly expensive to live there (we’re talking double, sometimes triple the rate of US prices, including the conversion rate) but thankfully Aldi came through and still held true to affordable prices!
