We're home in the states so get ready for Africa posts!
I feel like there should be some sort of disclaimer before I start sharing everything from our trip. I know we called it a missions trip when we talked about it but Americans tend to have this fixed idea about what a missions trip is {go with a church group & do projects/hard-core labor/street ministry for a week} and so I need to clarify.
We weren’t going with a church or group. Uncle Meredith has been going each year and working with a self-sustaining ministry called Hands In Service for over 18 years- serving on the board of directors and using his gifts in Finance to help them. Eleanna and I on the other hand were tagging along with open hearts and willing hands to do whatever was needed.
Originally, like normal Americans, El & I went with projects in mind but when we arrived we realized that what they really needed was love. Love from Jesus that would last much longer than any project could. Like Evelyn said, “...as Americans, we often limit what God can use us for because we have our set projects. But you have to enter into their celebrations & their suffering- not just the suffering. That’s the whole gospel.”
So we spent two weeks allowing Jesus’ love to flow through us onto these beautiful people. I don’t think of this trip as a missions trip whatsoever. To me, it was an opportunity to visit Uganda, immerse ourselves in their way of life, connect with people around the world and share God’s abundant blessings with them.
